Speech Therapy

There are several different names for this profession, including:

  • Speech Therapy
  • Speech Pathology
  • Speech-Language Therapy
  • Speech-Language Pathology
  • Speech-Language-Hearing Therapy

The name used varies regionally. For the sake of simplicity, the term ‘Speech Therapy’ is used as a general term on Therapidia to refer to the above-mentioned profession titles.

The scope of practice for this profession is very similar in each region, though there can be some variation. Please see some of the links below for the most up-to-date and comprehensive information regarding Speech Therapy scope of practice for your region.

In general, Speech Therapy practice involves the assessment and management of disorders of swallowing and communication. This includes:

Communication:

  • Speech production
  • Fluency (stuttering)
  • Voice
  • Resonance
  • Language (receptive, expressive and pragmatic skills)
  • Some areas of cognition that affect communication (e.g. memory, attention, problem-solving)

Swallowing:

  • Disordered swallowing in the oral, pharyngeal and esophageal stages
  • Other behavioural / physiological issues related to feeding & swallowing

To date, Therapidia includes Speech Therapy exercises related to disordered swallowing (Dysphagia series). We plan to soon add exercises related to the voice (Dysphonia series).
